Iran and Thailand 400 years of Historical Ties and 70 years of Diplomatic Relations

Iran and Thailand as two pacific nations have always had very friendly relations since more than 400 hundred years ago.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Iran and Thailand. The commemoration of this long-standing cordial relations coincides with the celebration of 46th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
The victory of the Islamic Revolution on 11th February 1979, is considered as one of the most important socio-political evolution in Iran’s contemporary history.
In 11th of the February of each year, Iranian Nation is celebrating the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution and pay respect to the founder of the Islamic Republic, late Imam Khomeini and those martyrs for the victory of the revolution to reiterate core objectives of the Revolution, which were Independence, Freedom and founding the Islamic Republic.
People’s revolution has caused the fall of an imperial dictatorial regime which was under strong support of superpowers.
This was one of the great wonders of modern world and new chapter in Iran’s history. These nationwide celebration in not just remembering the past; but it is embracing the present and dreaming about the future.
Despite hardships and obstacles the Islamic Republic has managed to accomplish tremendous achievements thanks to the resilience, endurance and determination of the Iranian nation in various areas such as health, medical treatment, education and literacy, science and technology. Iran is moving ahead in its development plan for the prosperity and well-being of our nation.
Despite cruel and illegal sanctions, Iran is among the leading countries in sciences as nanotechnology and biotechnology, satellite production, stem cells, robotic surgery, steel, chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical industries and productions.
Much of this success is driven by our talented scientists through innovations of nearly 10,000 knowledge-based enterprises in Iran and startups. Iran is now a global pioneer in producing medical isotopes for cancer treatment and neurological diseases. The young Iranian scientists have launched in recent years at least 10 satellites into orbits with indigenous know-how.
There are presently 3.2 million students at Iranian universities of whom 50.2 percent are women which indicates the women participation and acceptable gender balance in higher education. Also, share of women in senior managerial roles in government has remarkably increased.
During the past four decades Iran’s Human Development Index (HDI) has constantly improved, thanks to the State’s social justice and poverty reduction policies.
Turning to the situation in the Middle East, the recent genocide against Palestinians, which has caused the killing of thousands of innocent people in Gaza and Lebanon is a flagrant violation of basic humanitarian law.
We congratulate the Kingdom of Thailand on recent release of the 5 Thai national captives from Gaza. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to their families for their joys and happiness.
Our government, in particular our Foreign Minister have been in close contact with Foreign Minister of Thailand, to assist their release. Of course, this could have happened much sooner if the genocide had stopped against the Palestinian people.
The cultural ties between Iran and Thailand is increasing as both countries commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations. A common logo has been designed to be used on this auspicious occasion as a symbol of our cordial ties.
Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for Iranian tourists. In 2024, more than 50,000 Iranian tourists visited Thailand. The kingdom of Thailand is an important country for Iran; therefore, we are very keen to expand bilateral cooperation in cultural, political and economic relations, including expansion of tourism between the two countries.
The relations between Iran and Thailand in international fora such as UN and other multilateral organizations is very cooperative. Iran supported the membership of Thailand in UN Human Right Council.
In June 2024, H.E. Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand with his delegation participated in the 19th Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting, in Tehran. Last year in 3rd ACD Summit H.E. President Pezeshkian met with Prime Minister of Thailand Mrs. Paetongtarn Shinawatra and both leaders held bilateral meeting. Iran also supported Thailand’s BRICS membership.
We are much hopeful that with good will and support of the governments of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the kingdom of Thailand, we will witness further development of flourishing bilateral relations in all dimensions.
Finally, as the Islamic Republic of Iran and Royal Thai Government celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations on the auspicious occasion of the 72th Birthday Anniversary and Auspicious 6th Cycle of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran avails itself of this opportunity to offer to His Majesty the King RAMA X, the Royal Thai Government and the very respectful people of Thailand the assurances of highest esteem.
